From what I’ve read, sugar is not evil (which makes my sweet tooth jump for joy).  But it definitely is empty (of nutritional value) calories.  So if you’re looking to lose weight, it’s a waste of time.  Like hopping on youtube or Facebook if you have a paper due tomorrow.  Which is why the fake sugars are “good”/not bad.  They are generally zero calorie, which is good for weight loss… in moderation.  If you use fake sugar for coffee or have a diet coke once a day, I wouldn’t worry about big negative side effects.

Also, be careful when you read studies… most are done on mice.  Which are similar to humans, but doesn’t always translate.
